If your budget for nutrition only allows for the cost of a tub of pre-workout (which contains no amino acids [protein] ) I strongly recommend to put the pre-workout supplement down and choose a BCAA's intra-workout supplement instead. If you cannot afford a BCAA intra-workout then save your money for some liver, mince beef and eggs, then go home and eat those. Train with self animation and enthusiasm. You don't need a pre-workout to 'make' you work your ass off.
On the other hand, if you are fortunate enough to be able to utilise every nutritional aid on offer, get some protein, get your favorite pre-workout and sip a BCAA drink whilst you train. This will ensure you develop at the fastest rate possible.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not being negative towards pre-workouts, I love them and get a more intense, focused workout whilst using them! My message here is - ensure you have the foundations right before trying to build. Mainly ensure you are having sufficient protein on a daily basis, drip feed your body protein throughout your workout (as this is when it needs it most!), ensure your body is hydrated throughout the day, THEN look at how to build on these foundations such as pre-workouts for intensity, focus and drive.
